In the early 1970s, when Surrealism and the Cinema was written, Michael Gould was seeing surrealist influences in films most people were not. Most of the writing then on surrealism and film was in French and the only generally available book in English was written by an academic and, predictably, covered familiar territory.

Michael Gould wanted to help open people’s eyes to other aspects of surrealism in film (other worlds, in the truly surrealist sense) and for this he used an emotional approach, not an academic one. Today, with surrealism a part of popular culture and Surrealism and the Cinema disappearing from library shelves, the author decided to re-write his book not only to set a few things right but also to share his ideas with a new generation of readers whom he hopes will enjoy the book’s sense of humour and insights.
